How to split names into random groups

  1. 01

    Paste the full roster

Add one student, attendee, or participant per line. Blank lines and duplicate names are ignored when the groups are generated.

  2. 02

    Choose the group format

Set the number of groups for fixed stations or tables, or choose people per group when the activity has a capacity.

  3. 03

    Generate the groups

FunRandomizer shuffles the cleaned list in your browser and assigns every person to a group.

  4. 04

    Use the result

Reshuffle the same list, copy the groups, download them as text, or share the result.

Group count or group size?

Choose group count

Use this when you know how many stations, tables, project teams, or breakout rooms you need. Extra people are spread across groups so their sizes differ by no more than one.

Choose group size

Use this when an activity has a maximum capacity. FunRandomizer creates as many full groups as possible and leaves one smaller final group when needed.

Group generator, team generator, or pair generator?

Use this group generator for non-competitive small groups such as classroom projects, workshop tables, or breakout discussions. Use the team generator when people will compete as sides, and use the pair generator when every unit should contain two partners. Groups are balanced by headcount only—not by skill, ability, gender, or another personal attribute.

Random group generator FAQ

How do I create random groups from a list of names?

Paste one name per line, choose either the number of groups or the maximum group size, and select Generate groups.

Can I choose the number of groups?

Yes. Select By group count and set the exact number of non-empty groups you want.

Can I choose how many people are in each group?

Yes. Select By group size and enter the maximum number of people allowed in each group.

What happens when the names do not divide evenly?

In group-count mode, extra people are spread across the groups. In group-size mode, the final group may contain fewer people than the selected maximum.

Are the groups random?

Yes. FunRandomizer uses random values from the browser to shuffle the cleaned list before it divides the names into groups.

Can I copy or download the groups?

Yes. After generating groups, you can copy, download, share, or create a fresh arrangement from the same list.

Are names uploaded or saved?

No. The group generator processes the list in the current browser tab and does not upload it or save it to an account.

What is the difference between a group generator and a team generator?

Use a group generator for collaborative tables, classes, workshops, or breakouts. Use a team generator when the result represents competing sides for a sport, game, or tournament.

Can I switch from groups to teams or pairs?

Yes. Switch to Teams or Pairs without entering the participant list again. Each page explains the arrangement it is designed for.
